Platypus eDNA
Environmental DNA (eDNA) lets us detect platypus from the genetic traces they leave behind in water — shed skin, hair and cells. A single water sample, analysed in the lab, can confirm whether platypus are present in a waterway even when none are seen. This map shows where platypus eDNA sampling has been carried out and what it found.
